internships

Bowery Arts & Science is a non-profit organization seeking to preserve and enhance the oral tradition of poetry via live readings, media documentation and creation, and to restore poetry to the center of our culture, as it is in oral cultures. Our mission includes a strong educational component, introducing all manner of poetries to students of all ages; the preservation of endangered languages via the valuation of the poetry of these cultures; and the infusion and integration of poetry with other arts and the daily life of the citizenry.

During the Fall and Spring semesters of each academic year, BAS offers five internship positions Additionally, three positions are open for winter break, and four positions are open during summer break. We also accept non-students on a case-by-case basis; please contact us directly about these positions.

We can offer no stipend or other compensation for any internship; we can arrange academic credit at your institution. Perks of the internship include admission to all shows at the Bowery Poetry Club and the warm fuzzy of a job well done.

There are a variety of positions open each semester. Some of these include:

  • Placement at Bowery Arts and Science:
    • Grant research and writing
    • Assistance with program development
    • Web development and updating
    • Administrative assistant to the Development Director
    • PR & marketing of BAS programs

  • Placement at Bowery Poetry Club:
    • Sound: Interns learn how to set up equipment, run the board. Interact with real live poets and musicians. Record historic readings. Archive all readings for later digital distribution.
    • The Coffee Shop and Bar: Everyone helps out here, but some interns have actually learned barista/bartender skills and moved into the ranks at the Club or elsewhere.
    • Publicity: Learn to write press releases; help make the monthly calendar; devise marketing strategies; learn guerilla marketing. Ambition is a key here.
    • Bookstore: Help run the BPC Bookstore. Meet with poets who leave books on consignment, and urge poets you admire to contribute to our shelves.
    • Web development: Help maintain the BPC website and investigate other technical solutions, such as live webcasting.
    • Video archivist: Shoot the readings.

We accept proposals for positions not described here on a case-by-case basis.

Time commitments vary based on academic credit requirements. Average time commitments for 3 credits at an academic institution are 10 - 15 hours per week. Inability to complete these commitments can lead to the termination of the internship.
