Who benefits when you fund BAS? From the teen poets in our Summer Institute of Social Justice and Applied Poetics produced in partnership with Urban Word NYC, to people living with Alzheimer’s who take part in our Alzheimer’s Poetry Project; from migrant farm workers who learn English by taking poetry classes with Janine Pomy Vega and find their poems in our Bowery Book title, Estamos Aquí, to our recent Bengali-US poetry event with Kolkata’s leading poet, Sunil Gangopadhyay, Yusef Komunyakaa, and Joy Harjo….

Your donation that helps keep the Bowery Poetry Club afloat and allows us to create poetry and educational programming through our non-profit wing Bowery Arts and Science including: Griot in New York, Alzheimer’s Poetry Project, World of Poetry, Bowery Books, and the Summer Institute of Social Justice and Applied Poetics.

We’re proud of our place in the lineage of populist art: the Yiddish theater, burlesque and vaudeville, beat and punk that gave the Bowery its name before it slid to skid row, before its current resurrection as hot new Downtown high-rent zone.

So here we are, “a Beacon on the Bowery” (New York Times), a home of an “anarchic blend of spoken word, music and theater hijinx” (Time Out New York), and “a word playground where traditions can coexist and be passed on” (Village Voice). We’re asking for your support so we can not only be true to these words, but also broaden the opportunities for more to find their (poetic) homes here.
