Griot in New York: The theme of our “Griot in New York” series is to reveal the connections between urban hip-hop and spoken word, and their shared roots in the oral tradition of poetry. A griot is an African storyteller and keeper of history. The stories are told in the form of epic poems. Papa Susso is recognized internationally not only as a practicing griot, but as an educator of the griot tradition to western audiences. Throughout the year BAS holds “Griot in New York” events for students and the general public at the Bowery Poetry Club and other venues throughout the City.
